Program

The 2011 Orchestral Training Program provides a unique experience for young and emerging strings and woodwind students to undertake an intensive few weeks in the life of a professional orchestra. This year’s program allows students the opportunity to gain one-on-one mentoring from a working musician, including three structured 45 minute lessons to improve the students’ technical proficiency.

Students will have the opportunity to work on orchestral excerpts under the guidance of their mentor, as well as a piece which they’ll be required to prepare at the appropriate standard for audition with an Orchestra. During their time in the 3 week program participants will also be involved in the observation of working rehearsals (observing two conductors); introduction of the roles of Orchestra Management and Artistic Planning; and also a session with a physiotherapist, detailing the importance of looking after one’s body in a physically demanding occupation.

2011 offers students the chance to observe an internationally renowned guest conductor, Simone Young, as well as WASO’s Principal Conductor Paul Daniel and the WASO Chorus, and of course, the Orchestra itself.

The desired outcome of the OTP is for our young musicians to gain confidence from their experience with the orchestra and their mock audition. Ideally, young players will be identified to possibly sit a full casual audition within the following 12 months and be successfully incorporated into WASO’s casual list.
